Soundstream sound install into mini (photos)

Postby FeEBLeUK on Tue 9th Feb 2010, 11:25am

hey everyone, im new to soundsystems so really need advice with this :)

Image

i have a soundstream TR 500 for the componants, and a soundstream TR 880 for my subwoofer. Ive spoke to the guy at caraudiodirect and think im going to go for this sub and run it in stereo mode for my amp http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/jl-audio-12w6v2-d4.html

im just looking online now for front componants, id like some decent front componants in the front to run off the TR 500 and then maybe something for midrange in the back, but i dont really know what im looking for so im completely open to suggestions :)

ive made my boot floor flat, and welded up an extra box for a second battery on a split charge circuit

its all fun and games! thanks for any advice :)

That sub is a dual 4ohm voice coil. When you say about running it from your amp in stereo mode, what do you mean?

Basically, that sub can be wired as 2 ohm or 8 ohm. Running it as two 4 ohm coils fed a stereo signal won't do it any good, as the signal into each coil will be different as it's a stereo signal. What are the specs of the amp you'll be using to power the sub? To run that sub properly you'll need the amp to be 2 ohm stable in bridged mono mode, which I'm guessing it won't be as it's a stereo amp.

Your amp is most likely 4 ohm stable in mono mode, so I'd look for a 4 ohm sub. JL probably do a suitable version of that sub anyway.

I'd run a set of good comps in the front, and forget rear speakers. I ran just front comps and a sub in a mk4 Golf and it sounded awesome. Nobody in the back ever complained that they couldn't hear the music!

Certainly looks an interesting project mate!

You'd definately be best off buying a sub that can be wired to 4ohms, then you can give it the full 880watts.

The best place for advice is www.talkaudio.co.uk... the guys on there really know their onions.

the thing is that sub is dual coil, ok great ill look for one to take mono 880w will that mean louder bass will i still get the same sound quality through the full range?

Exactly, its dual 4ohms... so it can be wired to give 2ohms or 8ohms. If your amp isn't 2ohm stable in mono mode, then it'll overheat and either shut down or melt.

Now, your amp gives 2 x 220w into 4ohms, so you could use one channel per coil to give that sub 440w, and show both channels the same signal, so effectively running it in mono mode. However, due to differing tolerances etc, it'll probably be slightly different for each channel, which is another reason why it'd be better to use a mono amp on that sub. You could use it in mono mode and wire that sub to show 8ohms, but you'll then lose power, so rather than the amp putting out 1x 880w into 4ohms, it'd probably do 440w into 8ohms.

Now, there is some argument that for sound quality purposes, you're better off with 4ohms and over, but I've no experience of that to be honest. Subs intended to run maximum SPL though usually can be configured to show 1ohm or under to the amp in order to get maximum power.

I run a 4 ohm single-coil Genesis 12" sub in my car, and the same sub in my living room as well. That sub is plenty loud and sounds amazing, but then its a very efficient design and needs only about 300w tops., which comes from a Genesis Profile Sub amp giving it about 350w.

When you ask about louder bass and sound quality, its really all down to personal taste. I wouldn't want any more bass than my current sub gives me, as i want it to blend in seamlessly with the front end. Some people like seriously loud bass, but for me its silly as the front end usually can't keep up. If you want out-and-out sound quality, you need to pick a sub and sub amp that will operate well at the level the front speakers are playing at, without overpowering them.
