Rusting headlights any tips?

Postby PistolPete on Wed 3rd Mar 2010, 12:23pm

So with all the snow my little car has been taking a bit of punishment. Held up quite well though however the headlights are rusting really bad and I only fitted them in the summer.

Any tips on how to get the rust off and top it coming back. Looks like its cheap chrome again. Is there a polish/was/coating to stop them rusting? I'm on a mission to stop as much rot as I can after spending so long chopping out all the old tin worm.

Cheers

Pete,
Once the rust has got hold, it will always some back... need to be replaced.

But to clean them up, wire wool to remove what's there and a good wax to seal them.

You could always change the rings for stainless ones. If you buy a good quality set, they should shine almost as well as chrome. Problem solved then.

Just changing my overriders to stainless and then the car will have no chrome left at all.

Autosol is excellent for getting rid of the rust but it will come back again and again!

Don't buy anything new that is chrome basically... because it's all rhubarb!! Either buy good quality old stock/2nd hand stuff from when they used to chrome parts properly, or buy stainless steel.

OR if you can afford it, take yours to a proper chroming place, but be warned it'll cost you! Quote for 4 Beetle hub caps was £120+ !

It's hard to say without seeing how bad the rust is... But I always use Peek on my chrome bits, and that'll take off surface corrosion and shine up the chrome.
