What's this one worth?

Postby AH_Sprite on Thu 4th Mar 2010, 05:52pm

Hi all, please could you give me some advice?

I'm possibly going to buy this Mini... it's a reshelled 1969 car with a 1380 metro engine, metro brakes, brand new SU carb and dizzy, along with konis all around, and new Superlite rims, and it's been partially deseamed.

I'm aware that it's not the most original of cars, but what would you value it at? Here are some pics.
I await your opinions with interest!

Unfortunately the mods will have taken away from the value. deseaming will cause more problems than it solves in this case. what happens for example when the a panels rust?
Its hard to tell from photos as you would need to poke and see rust, condition of engine etc. At a wild guess anywhere between £1000-£2500.

It looks nice - but it's not 1969. Door has a corner, the hinges are internal, the rear lights are square. The number plate might be a H suffix, but there are a few indicators screaming that it's not as early as you think. I think 1969 should be MKII?

Doesn't mean it's not a nice car though - but the current owner might be trying to "add value" to it by claiming a little extra age... So beat them down on the price because of this if the car is otherwise good!!

Thanks both for your input. Nozzle, do you agree on the valuation that Zippy gave it?

It is doubtful that this car has been re-shelled, by the looks of things It has just had an earlier registration put on to it. If It is a re-shell there will be some pictures of this, beware if not as it may be stolen. The switch gear, wiring loom, boot, gear selector, bumpers, door cards, dash top rail, heater and lots more are all from a MK3 onwards.

Could be '69 if the tunnel is round, Mk3's came out in 69. Also look at the drip rail on the roof gutter. But a mk3 this early should have the ignition in the middle of the switch panel like the Mk2.

Just to add my input.

Its an early Mk 3 example.

De seaming is a love it or hate it thing. Seams were on minis as it made the build very quick in them days. Racers used to de seam as it removed a little of the surface area and believe it or not, could actually increase the speed potential by up to 5mph.

Personally i like the look, but as Zippy said, if you need to replace a panel, be prepared for hassle.

Its difficult to give a valuation on a picture, but if everythiong adds up as in the Minifinity Ultimate Mini Buyers Guide, then expect to pay around £2900 for it.

The engine is my main concern as a 1380 if not done correctly will give you loads of hassle. If anything does go wrong, you cant bore it anymore.

I should also say that partial de seaming is usually done as the person doing it isnt a confident welder.

The pillar seams are structural and usually get done by competant people.

Take your own opinion of what i think, but i'd be looking to pay around the £1600 mark and would then expext to have to complete the de seaming process properly.
