OK , I've been a busy geek....... so far I have arranged to drop the block off at MED next week it has been removed from the car and is all stripped down ready for them, I'm still unsure of my final spec of the engine but I do know it will be using the existing head (Minisport stg3) verniers, 1.5 roller rockers, 1380 block using Omega pisstons with a center main strap, balanced clutch and crank, MED stg1 ultra light clutch and I'm going to convert to a 3.44 diff. I'm still unsure on camshaft, I'm going to discuss this with MED and I'm also considering one of the new AC cams

Well, erm is anyone reading this????????????? Any way, the block is at now at MED, full spec is as above and I'm going to use one of MED's camshafts. The gearbox is my next job, going to change the final drive to a 3.44, I'm not very sure about gearboxes but I guess it's one way to learn.

Going to Bingly this weekend, picking up some parts and a ball joint socket as I still don't have one

AC did an article over a few miniworld mags last year. I had a read of one of them and it seemed to make sense - give him a shout or get a hold of back copies (I might have brought the one I had back..)

HTH,

Oh, and people do read this! Nice engine porn.... I'm not touching myself at all 8-[

mini porn, my heap of parts I got from Bingly.

Tonight I have striped the diff and pinion out of the gear box but I haven't taken the diff apart as I need to get a bearing puller, I'm quite concerned about the diff as the output shaft feel a bit slack in the diff but the diff gears seem fine......... I guess I will have to see what it's like once it's in bits. #-o

It's the MED RS I havn't got the full spec of the cam but I will get it as soon as I pester them. I think it's about a 276 duration, but I'm still open to opinion and I can change the cam in any time over the next two weeks (and any time after if it will run a 10.5:1 comp) all of this is as recomended for my needs by MED

as I said any opinions are welcome

Not a lot of info on the cam then, the RS cam looks to be a pretty modern design. With a wide powerband 1250-6500rpms. If I where you and your sticking with tens, I'd be looking at a 3.1 or 3.2 FD.

ok thanks, I was told by med it's peak power was at 7k but the website says 6.5k #-o

I proberly will keep the 3.1 now, I have had several people sugest a 3.1 and it was fine last tiem with a lower cam. but it was lucky that I did take the diff out because as it turns out my dif out put shafts are quite slack in the diff.

thanks for the input, Nighttrain what cam would you recomend for a good fast road 1380 not needed for everyday use just for fun?

Thanks.

chadwick had a morspeed PH3 in his 1380, there's wasn't much going on below 3K (so not really a daily) but from 3K up it pulled like a train! (105bhp and 80lbft of torque aswell IIRC)

Geek, you really should decide on the type of cam soon as the machining and assembly tolerances can be determined by the cam. The piston to bore clearances for example can differ between a sw5 torque type can and a 286 type cam.

Image
the above was a newly built 1380 ph3 setup tuned by AC. 105 bhp is optimistic imo.

the ph3 is a nice compromise between (undriveable) cammy 286 / 296 cams and the torquey sw5 type cams. AC should have his cnc & billet cams available soon, he has a number of profiles to choose from.

My personal preference which will be the opposite of everyone on here. I don't want a cam that will pull from 2000rpms, this is after all what the gearbox is for.

Trouble is when you start looking at anything bigger cam wise, you will need a close ratio box. I take it you are running the standard A+ gearset ? If so and you do get something along the lines of the 286 profile. You really do need more suitable ratio's, the S/GT ratio's been just about optimum for any fast road mini.

Personally I wouldn't consider anything less than a 286, in a 1380. But this would need, a close ratio box and final dive no higher than 3.6 (just to avoid confusion, 3.6 is lower than 3.44).

BUT be aware this isn't a motorway cruiser and will result in about 16mph per thousand rpm's. Meaning 70 is at about 4500rpms. Plus if your mini has to pass the stricter emissions tests come MOT time, you'll run into problems.

I think for your spec and type of driving, your on the right lines. Especially with the standard wider ratio box. Actually fitted a SW5 07 to a member of our local clubs 1293 and yes great road cam and as far as you want to go with a standard box. Phase 3 I haven't tried, so can't comment.

Re: Geek's red Mini Journal

Postby mini-geek on Wed 3rd Feb 2010, 06:03pm

Thankyou for the input, well after a long day at work thinking about the options and considering what has been mentioned I have come to the conclusion that, I don't need a track screemer engine I just wast a fast road engine (not a gay low down tourqe engine though) If I did get a 280+ duration cam I think I would regret it as it would be a bit top endy, and it would mean I would have to look at more gearbox mods and my budjet can't take that #-o

so I'm sticking with the MED RS cam but with a 3.1 diff and I'm getting the Minispare 4pin diff  oh and I'm getting a center oil pick up too, even if they arn't 100% nessiary but while it's in bits I may as well fit it.

I was aware of this, so I have gone for the Minispares COP as I hope they will have good quality standards like most of their other stuff.

Tonight I have removed the lay shaft ready for fitting the COP and cleaned up the gasket surfaces, I have to admit I was scared of gearboxes but once you get them to bits it's not as bad as I thought. But I'm still not attempting the main shaft!

It's only bloody update time!

Today I have been to MED or as I'm now calling it mini porn central, to pick up the engine. It's rather nice to say the least and I have also got a huge box of extra stuff I have bought, I will put up some pictures tommorow.

I have made a start on the final cleaning of the block and crank (I'm secretly in love with my crank with it's cross drilling  ) I just need to give it a final blast through with panel wipe tommorow and then I'm going to put the cor plugs in and I might put the crank in.

I've been working flat out the past couple of days I manged 4 hours on Friday and 7 hours on Saturday. It's now in the mini with most of the things connected up. but I'm going to need a couple more parts and I need to cut the rocker cover to clear the 11 studs.

As you can see I haven't got all the other bits bolted on in the pictures but I couldn't be bothered taking pictures tonight.

Jobs left to do..... Modd' the rocker cover, connect the oil pipe one I have the correct fitting, connect the gear linkage, fit exhaust and Y piece, fill with oil.......

It's alive!!!!!

It's bloody alive

I have downloaded an app on my phone so I can do a Dazzler TM style erm,,,, video

It started first time......... then I must have increased the fueling too much as it rapidly flooded #-o spark plugs out dred that out reduced the fuel a bit more.......... It's runns! So now I have had it running for about 30 mins at around 2000 rpm I just need to get the fueling somthing close so I'm going to get it MOT'd and I can use there gas analizer while I'm there.

thn off to the rolling road to get it set up!

Video to follow later today!
