SPI Coilpack Problem

Postby X2Board on Sat 31st Jul 2010, 07:44pm

Hello All,

The coil pack in a friends car just died and a replacement was ordered.
The only difference noticed on the new one was the #1 & #4 swapped places.
Both had the 4 wire jack with three wires coming to it from the car's harness.
When we hooked it up and bolted in with new plug leads installed, the car idled fine , but when revved it broke up sounding like a terrible misfire , the two inner plugs (2&3) werent firing.
I did a search on this board and tried the solutions mentioned , but those referred to the MPI , & I got no success.

The grounding issue mentioned in a past thread might be the culprit , but I dont know which ground wire they addressed that solved the problem.

I'll upload some pictures of the two coil packs , the one with the wires is the new one ...

Any suggestons to solve this problem?

Ok, as far as i know all UK spec SPi's used a conventional type cylindrical coil with a dumb distributor.

Either you have an MPi or you have one of the SPi Japanese domestic market re-imports? Does it have air conditioning and an automatic gearbox?

Sorry. I forgot to mention that part. It is a JDM SPi with a coil pack.

There isnt a lot of technical data for the Japanese SPi's, i believe they use a hybrid of the MPi's ignition system with the SPi's fueling system.

The UK parts catalogues list a lot of JDM stuff, but they don't seem to show enough parts to make a working system.

The actual MPi coil pack originates from Peugeot/Citroen, the same one is used on 106's, if thats of any help.

are you getting a spark from 2&3? if you are swap 2&3 around and see if it works. it may just be that your coil is labelled wrong.

Yes I tried swapping all the wires & checking that all the leads were installed correctly... no luck

I put in a few hours on the mini this weekend trying to solve the Coil pack issue....
(no spark out of # 2& #3 Spark plugs)...
I swapped the Crank angle sensor, plugs, leads , ecu , checked all grounds and wires
but at the end of it all, still no spark out of #2 & #3 spark plugs.

I guess there's no interchageability between the UK Spec MPi Coil pack and the Jap Spec SPi Coil pack.

The trick now is to identify a the part # from the JDM Spi Coil Pack & source a replacement to solve the problem...
