Outer CV joint

Postby dxs90 » Sat 21st Mar 2020, 04:44pm

Hi all,

Currently finishing off the front subframe, all suspension and brakes are now done, just need to finish the driveshaft. I bought new boots for the outer CV joint, but whilst it is all off the car, i was curious if i need to actually replace the cv joint as well? Photos attached here https://imgur.com/a/PzcqvS5.

I believe it is one fixed unit. Would you replace just the boot or the whole body if you were in my shoes?

Secondly, would you advise fitting the inner cv joint now or fit it when the engine is dropped into place?

Thanks

You can tell if a CV joint is knackered by driving it at full lock - but how you make the same judgement with it off the car I don't know. It would involve washing the grease out to inspect. New grease is supplied with the boot kit anyway.

It's just an economic/time argument if you decide to replace the joints as they can be done with the engine in the car if they click on full lock once you get it on the road.

Thanks Nozzle, I think on that basis I will replace with new ones.
