Duff earth/suspected short, how to find it?

Postby PistolPete » Wed 20th May 2020, 04:29pm

Hi all,

LTNS. The mini has finally been dug out of the remains of the old workshop after it burn down last year and had the contents of a lake poured on it, its fared quite well considering but the 10 months of damp environment in the shell of the workshop have played havoc with the electrics :(

So here is what I'm seeing can someone give me some pointers as to where to start looking as I'm well out of practise.

* Battery is charged and confirmed, even put jump leads on it to make doubly sure.
* Electric fuel pump (Facet) in the boot runs but sounds really weak (barely audible). Putting it direct to the battery makes it run sweet and loud like it should and gives me fuel pressure up front confirmed with the built in gauge in the engine bay.
* Car will turn over and even start (that was a surprise) but as soon as I let the key roll back to position 2 (so the starter disengages) it cuts out completely like I've just killed it. This was done with the pump wired direct to battery and avoiding the ignition feed completely.
* The starter cranks strong which again surprised me, if the pump is struggling from a bad earth then I would have thought the starter would to?
* Given the earth cable a wiggle and everything else but no luck.
* I did notice that the 4 or 5 cables for the ignition barrel where warm/hot to the touch at the plug which makes me think the short might be in the ignition barrel?

Running a Mega Jolt light and ford coil pack. Wiring is (or was) in good order.

Its been stood for far too long and not in the best of health. I'm guessing it a afternoon of slowly checking everything and cleaning up connections with a few brews but thought I'd reach out and see if anyone has any pointers on where to look. The cut out and weak fuel pump are confusing me.

Cheers

Pete

If you crank and return the key, what lights are left on the dash?

certainly plugs should not get hot, a poor connection would do this

as for non starting, if the ignition lights are on before you crank, the wiring should be ok.

Ahh I've got the clocks out (as the dash didn't survive the damp), I'll stick them back in and check.

Indeed. Without significant time and investment, its hard to develop. Social media has taken a large chunk from all manner of forums, but FB and the likes arent a great place for archival and searching.
